The Art of Moderation

There are many pros and cons to any types of censorship; however, its best to avoid any extremes. There are always people who test the waters of what they can and can’t post. As a result social media platforms such as Instagram aren’t held totally responsible for what people post on their platform.

With being exempted from constitutional laws, social media platforms still have responsibilities to the users to exclude hate speech, threats, social degradation, harassment, and other seriously hurtful content. Although they also have a responsibility to uphold the creativity, expression, and freedom of speech. This balance is made possible by the terms of conditions and content moderators of said social media company.

Based on my own opinion of what social media companies should moderate, and my own experiences with Instagram, I think they are doing a pretty good job of maintaining the balance that is freedom of speech. Instagram is a platform that may look like it has unlimited power over its platforms’ content, but it always has to take a plethora of factors into consideration based on this and their policies.

No. I don’t think Instagram is too harsh with their policies.
