THE LAW AND LEADERSHIP SUMMER INSTITUTEWHO:Current eighth-graders who reside in Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton and Toledo, Ohio and will be attending a public high school in their city are eligible to apply for the Law and Leadership Summer Institute. LLI accepts bright and motivated students who exhibit a willingness to learn and high potential to excel in academic and their chosen career path.WHAT:The Law and Leadership Summer Institute is a rigorous, five-week program that features course work in criminal law and court procedures taught by Ohio law students, with the assistance of high school teachers. LLI summer scholars meet established members of the law profession in class and on field trips to courtrooms and law offices. The intensive program concludes with a mock trial competition which gives participants a chance to test their skills in front of not only practicing judges and lawyers, but also their friends and family members. After successfully completing the Summer Institute, students can apply to continues their studies in LLI throughout high school.There is no cost to students to attend LLI. Lunch and program materials are provided free of charge to all LLI scholars. WHERE:The Summer Institute is held in six Ohio cities at eight Ohio law schools. Accepted students will attend classes at the law school in their locale. Participating locations include University of Akron School of Law, University of Cincinnati College of Law, Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Cleveland State University's Cleveland-Marshall School of Law, Capital University Law School, The Ohio State University's Moritz College of Law in Columbus, University of Dayton School of Law, and the University of Toledo College of Law.WHEN:The Summer Institute will take place Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., from early June 27 through July 29, 2011.WHY:In addition to a basic understanding of the study and practice of law, you will learn skills in leadership, test-taking, studying, writing and self-expression that will be critical to your success as a student and future professional. At LLI, you will make friends with like-minded, intelligent and talented students and fin role models in the dedicated and passionate law students how teach your classes. You will meet successful legal professionals, including judges and lawyers, who will not only inspire you, but advise and support you, too. At LLI, you will be challenged. You will work hard, ask tough questions and push yourself farther than youve ever imagined. You will be better because of it and we hope you will grow to become a leader in your community and future career field.HOW:Eligible eighth-grade students can apply directly to the Summer Institute by completing and submitting the application form (available on the left side of this page). Applications must be received by the April 8 deadline in order to be considered.
